iPhone Duo is a foldable smartphone designed and marketed by Apple Inc. It is the company's first foldable iPhone and uses a book-style design with a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display that folds along a central hinge.[1][4] Apple announced the device on 9 September 2026 at its "Surprise and shine" event in Cupertino, California, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.[1][5] The announcement was the first keynote presented by John Ternus as Apple's chief executive.[6][7] Pre-orders open on 16 October 2026, and the release date is 23 October 2026 in more than 70 countries, with 28 further countries following on 30 October.[1][8]

The device is built around Apple's A20 Pro system on a chip, the same processor used in the iPhone 18 Pro models, and ships with iOS 27.1.[1][5] Its specifications include a titanium frame, an IP68 rating, a two-cell battery, a 48-megapixel dual rear camera system and a front camera hidden beneath the inner screen.[3][1] Several features of Apple's Pro iPhones are absent: the device uses Touch ID in the side button rather than Face ID, has no dedicated telephoto lens, and supports only eSIM in every market.[3][7] Apple lists it as 5.2 mm thick when open and 11.3 mm when closed, weighing 254 g.[3]

The price starts at US$1,999 for the 256 GB model and rises to US$3,199 for 2 TB, and press coverage described it as the most expensive iPhone to date.[2][8][9] In India it is priced from ₹2,99,900.[10][9] Launch coverage compared the device with Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 series and Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold, and noted that Apple entered the foldable category roughly seven years after Samsung's first Galaxy Fold.[7][9] Common questions about the device are collected in a separate FAQ.

History and naming

DOCUMENTED Before its announcement, the device was referred to in press reports for several years as the "iPhone Fold" or "iPhone Ultra".[6][11] Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman reported the "Duo" name in the days before the launch event.[11] Apple had used the name before, for the PowerBook Duo line of subnotebook computers and for the MagSafe Duo charger; it is unrelated to Microsoft's discontinued Surface Duo, a dual-screen Android device.[11]

Apple unveiled iPhone Duo on 9 September 2026 during the "Surprise and shine" event at its headquarters in Cupertino.[1][5] Apple presented it as the first new iPhone form factor since the original iPhone, and its press release quoted Ternus describing the device as the most transformational change to the iPhone since the first model.[1] DOCUMENTED The same event introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which retain the external design of the iPhone 17 Pro, along with Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, which made iPhone Duo the only new iPhone shape of 2026.[5][6] It was also the first product launch presided over by Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook as chief executive.[6][7]

Design

iPhone Duo has a short, wide, book-style form that Apple compares to a passport when closed.[1][12] Closed, it measures 117.8 mm tall, 84.1 mm wide and 11.3 mm thick; open, it is 164.6 mm wide and 5.2 mm thick, and it weighs 254 g.[3] Apple states that the open device is the thinnest iPhone it has made, thinner than the iPhone Air.[1][5]

The frame is machined from Grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish, and the hinge cover is 3D-printed from 100 percent recycled titanium with a contrasting micro-blasted texture.[1][12] DOCUMENTED Press reports describe the hinge mechanism itself as a blend of titanium and aluminium.[12] According to Apple, the hinge contains more than 100 precision components, supports the centre of the inner display so that it lies flat, includes a magnet array that holds the device closed, and can be held at intermediate angles.[1][4] Internal support ribs and ceramic-fibre inserts in the antenna splits stiffen the chassis.[4] The back is covered in Ceramic Shield and the outer display in Ceramic Shield 2.[1][5] The device is rated IP68, which Apple specifies as resistance to immersion at 6 metres for up to 30 minutes.[3][5]

The outer edge has curved corners, while the corners at the hinge are squared.[12] DOCUMENTED Reports place the volume buttons on the top edge.[12] The Camera Control button of recent iPhones is retained, and the side button integrates a Touch ID fingerprint sensor; the device does not include Face ID.[3][7] It is offered in Star White and Night Sky.[1] Apple says the device contains 35 percent recycled material overall, uses 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery, ships in fibre-based packaging, and is manufactured with 60 percent renewable electricity.[4]

Hardware

Displays

Both displays are Super Retina XDR OLED panels with ProMotion adaptive refresh rates of up to 120 Hz, always-on capability and a peak outdoor brightness of 3000 nits.[3][4] The inner display measures 7.6 inches diagonally (7.58 inches as a rectangle) at 2670 × 1878 pixels and 430 pixels per inch; the outer display measures 5.4 inches (5.36 inches as a rectangle) at 2034 × 1398 pixels and 460 pixels per inch.[3] The two panels share the same aspect ratio, so that content scales continuously as the device is opened or closed.[4] Apple states that the inner display is about 50 percent larger than that of the iPhone 18 Pro Max and that the outer display offers roughly 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro.[4]

The inner display has a nano-texture matte finish that Apple says reduces glare and the visibility of the fold.[4] Its cover combines a custom polymer, described by Apple as 40 percent stiffer than the industry norm, with a scratch-resistant coating over glass layers and a titanium plate beneath, in a stack of ten ultra-thin layers.[4] A FaceTime camera sits beneath the inner panel and is concealed when not in use.[1][3] UNKNOWN Apple's published specifications do not include a measurement of the crease.[3] Apple has said that support for Apple Pencil (USB-C) on both displays will arrive in a software update later in 2026.[1][4]

Chip and performance

iPhone Duo uses the A20 Pro, the same chip as the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, manufactured on a 2-nanometre process.[1][5] Apple states that its six-core CPU is up to 20 percent faster than the A19 Pro, that its seven-core GPU is up to 40 percent faster, that the dual 16-core Neural Engine doubles on-device AI compute, and that unified memory bandwidth is 50 percent higher.[4] The chip sits in a new package, which Apple compares to its M-series processors, bonded to a vapour chamber; Apple claims up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro.[4] A new display engine drives both panels simultaneously.[4]

UNVERIFIED Apple does not publish the memory capacity of its iPhones. Third-party specification databases list 12 GB of RAM for iPhone Duo, a figure Apple has not confirmed.[13][14]

Battery and charging

The device uses two battery cells, one in each half, with energy rebalancing so that they behave as a single battery.[4] Apple rates video playback at up to 31 hours on the inner display and up to 44 hours on the outer display, and about 24 hours in typical mixed use of both screens.[1][5] With a USB-C power adapter of 60 W or more, the battery charges to 50 percent in about 20 minutes; with MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging at 25 W, 50 percent takes about 30 minutes.[3][4] Apple's listed box contents are the phone and a 1-metre USB-C charging cable.[3]

Cameras

The rear camera system, which Apple calls 48MP Dual Fusion, consists of a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera (26 mm equivalent, ƒ/1.6, sensor-shift optical image stabilisation) and a 48-megapixel Fusion Ultra Wide camera (13 mm, ƒ/2.2, 120-degree field of view) that also handles macro photography.[3] There is no dedicated telephoto lens and no variable aperture, both of which are present on the iPhone 18 Pro.[15][7] The main camera captures 24-megapixel images by default and 48-megapixel images at full resolution, and provides a 12-megapixel optical-quality 2× telephoto crop equivalent to 52 mm.[3] Apple describes the system as a 4× optical-quality zoom range, from 0.5× to 2×, with digital zoom up to 10×.[3] The main camera records 4K video at up to 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision, and cinematic-mode effects can be applied after capture.[3][4]

The outer display carries a 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera that adjusts framing automatically and widens its field of view for group photos; a second front camera sits under the inner display for FaceTime calls when the device is open.[3][5]

Several camera features depend on the folding design.[1][4] Smart Take captures a photo automatically when subjects pose; Duo Preview mirrors a live preview on the outer display so that subjects can see themselves; and the rear cameras can be used for self-portraits with the outer display as a viewfinder.[1][4] Kid Cue plays Peanuts animations on the outer screen to draw a child's attention to the lens.[4] In FaceTime, Duo FaceTime lets a second person join a call through the outer display and camera, and Dual Capture records front and rear feeds at the same time.[4] A Siri camera mode, activated with Camera Control, lets Siri respond to what the camera sees.[4]

Connectivity

iPhone Duo supports only eSIM; no configuration in any market has a physical SIM tray.[3][7] Apple's N1 wireless chip provides Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread.[3] Cellular connectivity uses the Apple C2, the company's second-generation modem, which Apple says uses machine learning to improve signal quality; mmWave 5G is supported in the United States.[4][3] DOCUMENTED Apple states that the C2 is up to 50 percent faster than the C1X, and reports add that it is about 15 percent more power-efficient.[5][16] An iOS 27 feature called iPhone Handoff allows one phone number to be moved between two iPhones; T-Mobile in the United States and Telekom in Germany are the launch carriers.[1] Satellite features are supported, and the device can be unlocked with an Apple Watch.[3][4]

Software

iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1, a version of iOS 27 adapted to the folding form factor.[1] On both displays, the Lock Screen controls, the Home Screen Dock and app navigation are moved to a side edge to preserve vertical space for content, and the Dynamic Island runs vertically along the side.[4] When open, the Home Screen shows two pages of apps and a vertically scrolling Today View widget column on the left.[4] The system responds to the hinge angle and orientation, moves between displays automatically when the device is opened or closed, shifts content away from the fold when the device is partially open, and adjusts speaker tuning to the hinge angle.[4]

Split View, available on an iPhone for the first time, places two apps side by side on the inner display; it also supports two windows of the same app, saved app pairs, drag-and-drop between the two halves, and a Siri conversation on one half while content is viewed on the other.[1][4] StandBy works on either display even when the device is not charging and gains new Calendar, Weather and Photos faces.[4] Apple named Netflix, Zoom, Slack and Detail as third-party apps already adapted for the device, and provides developers with new APIs and Device Hub support in Xcode.[1]

The iOS 27 release of 14 September 2026 adds Apple Intelligence features including Spatial Reframing, Extend, an upgraded Clean Up tool, a photorealistic Image Playground, a Safari Notify Me option for page-change alerts, and Call Context in the Phone app.[1] Siri AI is offered as a beta with iOS 27, initially in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish planned for October and no initial availability in the European Union; it adds personal context, on-screen awareness, writing assistance and a dedicated Siri app.[1] Server-side Siri features have daily usage limits, and Apple has said a paid expansion is planned.[1]

Apple sells two first-party covers for the device.[1] The iPhone Duo Case is a two-part wraparound case offered in sand and navy blue for US$79, and the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand, offered in navy blue and taupe for US$129, has a multi-angle kickstand.[1] Both are compatible with MagSafe, Qi2 at 25 W and Qi charging, and both can be ordered from 16 October 2026.[1][4]

Prices in these and other launch countries are collected on the price by country page.[2][10][17] In the United States, Apple offers the base model on Apple Card Monthly Installments at US$83.29 per month over 24 months, and through the Apple Upgrade lease programme, operated with Klarna, from US$57.99 per month on a 24-month term.[4] DOCUMENTED In India, the starting price is roughly ₹1 lakh above the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra (₹1,99,999) and the Galaxy Z Fold8 (₹1,79,999).[9]

Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday 16 October 2026.[1][4] The device goes on sale on Friday 23 October 2026 in more than 70 countries and regions, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States and Vietnam, with a second group of 28 countries following on Friday 30 October 2026.[1]

Press coverage

DOCUMENTED Launch coverage widely framed the device as Apple's entry into a category that Samsung opened roughly seven years earlier with the first Galaxy Fold.[7][6] Price was the most common theme: the US range of US$1,999 to US$3,199 was described as the highest for any iPhone, and Gizbot calculated that in India the device costs more than a Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and a MacBook Neo combined.[9][8] Reporters listed the omissions relative to the iPhone 18 Pro as the main trade-offs: no telephoto lens, no variable aperture, no Face ID, and eSIM-only connectivity.[7][6] UNKNOWN Questions about the durability of the hinge and the visibility of the crease were left open pending long-term testing of review units.[9][12]

Public reaction

INFERRED On X, original posts mentioning the device numbered roughly 96,000 in the week around the announcement, almost all on launch day; in a sample of 112 non-spam posts compiled by this site's editors, roughly 35 to 40 percent were positive, 30 to 35 percent negative and the remainder neutral.[18] Price was the largest cluster of complaints, followed by the observation that Samsung had shipped a foldable years earlier, the device's weight and thickness compared with the Galaxy Z Fold8, the absence of Face ID, and the visibility of the under-display camera.[18][19][20][21] Praise concentrated on the thinness of the open device, the titanium construction, the nano-texture inner display and Split View multitasking.[18][22] The most-engaged post in the sample came from Samsung's US mobile account, which mocked Apple as reheating leftovers, one of several posts from that account on launch day.[23] The reviewer Mrwhosetheboss called the hardware impressive but paused at the US$1,999 starting price, and a widely shared comparison listed the device as about 53 g heavier and thicker than the Galaxy Z Fold8.[24][25] UNKNOWN No teardown or durability test had been published by launch day; the YouTuber Zack Nelson (JerryRigEverything) had reacted only to a hands-on video.[26]
